Construction Innovation Hub

Securing the legacy of the UK's Construction Innovation Hub, promoting major innovations in its digital and assurance workstreams

Construction Innovation Hub Stand Logo

Founded by BRE, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and Centre for Digital Built Britain, the Construction Innovation Hub has collaborated with hundreds of industry bodies, policy makers, practitioners and academics to drive innovation throughout construction, addressing the sector’s performance and productivity challenges.

Building the CIH legacy

The CIH's vision is for a world where our built environment improves quality of life, delivers greater social value, reduces environmental impact and is delivered by a world-leading, innovative and sustainable industry.

LMC was appointed in 2022 to promote CIH’s legacy from its assurance and digital workstreams, starting with the LEXiCON methodology which was already close to being published and at testing phase with early adopters.

LEXiCON is designed to provide the construction industry with a plain language dictionary to share product data consistently so it can be standardised for BIM and support creation of machine-readable product specifications.

Other initiatves we promoted included:

  • Construction Product Quality Planning (CPQP), which helps construction product and platform manufacturers to improve QA processes
  • Verification and Validation, which ensures products meet their performance and quality requirements
  • D-COM, which tests designs against regulation, and heralds the introduction of machine-readable Building Regs
  • Change Control, designed to provide an audit trail as products and manufacturing methods change and adapt.

Our campaign generated more than 100 pieces of targeted media coverage in just a few months, reaching more than 1.5 million construction industry professionals and influencers

Education and thought leadership

We were tasked with using communications to educate the construction sector about manufacturing, its processes and systems in an understandable way, tackle perceptions around technical guidance and tools, and focus on media, in-person and visual storytelling.

Our intensive project included:

  • Strategy workshops with all Assurance and Digital activity teams
  • Advice and outreach to influential stakeholders
  • Copywriting for guidance documents and methodology report
  • Multichannel content development
  • Speaker presentations for industry events
  • Thought leadership articles and case studies
  • Building journalist awareness through media releases, reactive comment and briefing opportunities.
CIH workshop May 2022
LMC ran two comms workshops for the Construction Innovation Hub's assurance and digital projects teams, held in person at the BRE with colleagues also joining online. It helped us map out all the different requirements for each of the Hub's projects, collating creative ideas and agreeing the best approach and opportunities for greater communications impact.

Results

  • Multiple plaudits

This campaign reached many influential stakeholders. At the launch of CPQP, Dame Judith Hackitt described it as "a very positive response to the new regulatory requirements for quality assurance... Learning good practice from manufacturing sectors is a smart way to accelerate the pace of change in construction"

    2 strategy workshops

Achieving complete alignment of all comms teams and academics around a clear strategy and consistent messaging

  • 100 pieces of high-impact media coverage

Reaching more than 1.5 million industry professionals

1,700 additional engagements on social media

Amplifying online media coverage and building discussions around productivity and quality in construction

"Thank you LMC, the workshops were really valuable in clarifying the strategy and ordering our thoughts."
