Milton Keynes gears up for next phase of growth
In this month’s LMC news round-up, Nikki Wilson delves into some of the interesting developments already taking shape across Milton Keynes.

In March 2026, the Government named Milton Keynes as one of the seven priority locations for the New Towns Programme, with plans to deliver housing and infrastructure at an accelerated pace.
Several large-scale housing developments are under construction across Milton Keynes, with a further 40,000 new homes in the pipeline as part of the proposals for the New Towns Programme. These will be supported by increases in education, health and transport infrastructure and the densification of Central Milton Keynes.
In the meantime, a number of significant projects are already underway, set to transform community, leisure, education and health facilities across the city of Milton Keynes.

City of Culture 2029
In August, Milton Keynes submitted its bid to become the City of Culture 2029. With the iconic National Bowl established as an outdoor concert venue since 1979, the city has plans to create an additional 4,000-capacity entertainment venue by 2029.
A new City of Culture is announced every four years, with previous winners including Bradford and Hull. Milton Keynes is competing with Blackpool, Inverness, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swindon and Wrexham for the title.
A shortlist will be announced in the autumn, with the final decision made in early 2027.

LOVE Wolverton regeneration
A major regeneration project in Wolverton, Milton Keynes has broken ground this summer. The LOVE Wolverton project seeks to regenerate the old Agora Centre which was home to a popular roller-skating disco in the 1980s.
Designed by architect Mikhail Riches for Milton Keynes Council and developer TOWN, the £76.8 million scheme will create new homes, shops, public spaces and community facilities and includes an innovative co-housing project.

Hospital 2.0
Construction is due to start on a new hospital for Milton Keynes in 2027, with completion expected by 2030. The project is being delivered as part of the government’s £60 billion New Hospital Programme, which aims to deliver new hospital infrastructure more efficiently through industrialised construction.
With Morgan Sindall Construction named as main contractor, the hospital will be delivered following the ‘Hospital 2.0’ approach. This includes optimised hospital layouts using a toolkit of standardised components such as in-room MEP modules, ensuite bathroom pods, cladding, partitions and doors.

SEN centre
A new SEN centre at St Paul’s Catholic School in Milton Keynes has recently been completed, providing dedicated support for up to 24 students aged 11 to 19 with autism.Designed by Urban Fabric Architects, the new Emmanual Centre was constructed from a glulam timber frame with locally made brickwork. The centre is designed to be light, bright and comfortable with triple glazing and double height spaces, providing a calm, flexible and supportive learning environment.
With such a range of interesting new projects underway, Milton Keynes continues to assert its reputation as a city for growth and innovation.
